Man on the move - John Wesley Harding
Folk-rocker and novelist John Wesley Harding is bringing his sophisticated storytelling to World Cafe Live - and his family to a home in Philadelphia.
By Dan DeLuca; Inquirer Music Critic Philadelphia Inquirer There's an Englishman who's moving to Mount Airy from Brooklyn sitting at a cafe in Manayunk, explaining the ways in which his two artistic callings are extremely different from each other, yet still very much the same. "Playing music can get you instant gratification," says John Wesley Harding. "If I write a song, I can go play it at the World Cafe Live next week, and people will - I hope - applaud." The folk-rock troubadour will do just that tonight when he cohosts the musical-comedy-literary variety show Wes & Eugene's Cabinet of Wonders at the University City venue. Joining him will be comedian Eugene Mirman, songwriters Jonatha Brooke and Chris Mills, plus a couple of Philadelphians you might not expect to see at a rock club - actor David Morse and author Ken Kalfus. As Harding - a name he borrowed from a Bob Dylan album - he has been writing and singing songs more cleverly and with greater sophistication than most, from It Happened One Night in 1988 through the new Who Was Changed & Who Was Dead (Popover ***). The Baseball Project hits the road with an away game and 6 week strech around the US
Seems like the Baseball Project is getting its first official gig, after doing some songs the day before Steve and Linda's wedding, and some TV appearances. They are finally ready to rock out in front of an audience and will go all the way to the beautiful city of "Sos Del Rey Catolico" in Spain for the "Luna Lunera Festival" on August 7th. Later that month the "Steve Wynn/Minus 5/Baseball Project" tour will kick off in the States for 6 weeks of music.
And some more good news comes from Steve Wynn's blog, "It also looks like we’ll be making a follow-up to “Frozen Ropes and Dying Quails” before the tour begins so I suddenly find myself being able to justify baseball watching as Actual Research, an immersion songwriting program (watered-down beer and stale peanuts can only help the process, I suppose)."
