Broadside Ballad n° 2 - 'Cubs 2010'
As Opening Day arrives, predictions about the new baseball season are rampant, and The Baseball Project is no exception. The band, however, has put its projection to music with the latest "Broadside Ballads" song, "Cubs 2010."
By Jim Wilkie - ESPN.com Your favorite baseball scribe's prognostications don't sound very good on your iPod, but you can download an MP3 version of "Cubs 2010" for free here, exclusively for ESPN.com. If the Cubbies succeed in their quest to end their 102-year drought, the optimistic pop tune crafted by Scott McCaughey is destined to be the club's soundtrack in an epic journey to the World Series. Chicago, which opens the season in Atlanta on Monday, simply needs Carlos Marmol to "finally show what it takes -- to hold down the closer's job," Aramis Ramirez and Derrek Lee to be "30/100 men," Carlos Zambrano "to keep his head" and Alfonso Soriano to avoid injuries. Does McCaughey truly believe this could be the Cubs' year? "Sure, why not? It's like the song says, if all these things happen, it could go that way," McCaughey wrote in an e-mail interview last week. "They need Zambrano to be dominant, they need to get [Ted] Lilly back soon, they need Ramirez, Lee and Soriano to be healthy, and see if Marmol really is going to be able to harness his closer stuff." McCaughey acknowledges that's a lot of ifs, but he said he believes that offseason outfield acquisition Marlon Byrd could potentially have a huge year and that the offense "could be tremendous if Geovany Soto gets it back together." Scott McCaughey remembers Alex Chilton
From Magnet Magazine
Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows, Minus 5) Just last week, I’d been listening to the CD of the first two Big Star albums non-stop in the car, marveling at how current they sounded. Not many records from the ’70s sound like they haven’t dated at all. I was thinking about how this group made three albums, all masterpieces, and how difficult it is to pick a favorite. When I started the Minus 5 in 1993, Third/Sister Lovers was the acknowledged blueprint for where I wanted to go with the project. Simply said, if not for that album, there wouldn’t be a Minus 5. Now, that wouldn’t change the world, but it sure is important to me. My favorite Alex Chilton live moment occurred sometime during the ’80s at the (long gone but much lamented) Backstage in Seattle. Chilton, in the midst of a good-humored R&B set with his nifty three-piece electric combo, lurched into an appropriately creepy version of Porter Wagoner’s “The Rubber Room.” Alex, playing a Les Paul Jr. borrowed from the opening band, took off into an extremely long, out-of-this-world solo. When he finally came back to earth, it seemed like he had lost himself so deeply in his playing that he wasn’t entirely sure what song they had been playing when he started! A very enlightening moment from a very enlightened man. Posted on 23 Mar 2010 by Stoffel
